About us: The Soule Homestead Education Center is a 501 (c)(3) not for profit organization that is currently in its 35th year in operation, on 120 acres in Middleborough, MA. Our mission is to preserve and enhance the historic Soule Homestead and utilize it as a place for hands-on, farm-based learning experiences for children and families, passive recreation and to create community through our traditional craft workshops, and our cultural events. About the position: The Soule Homestead is currently seeking an Education Coordinator with experience teaching outdoors to develop and lead the farm based educational programming aimed at children aged 2 and up. We are looking for a person with a passion for agriculture, spending time outside, and connecting children and families to these values. This person will be an important part of a small but enthusiastic staff team. Reporting to the Executive Director, and working with volunteers and our Administrative Assistant, the Education Coordinator plays a key role at Soule Homestead Education Center.
We run children’s programming all year round, including during the summer and school vacations throughout the year. This position is up to 32 hours a week Oct-March, and transitions to 40 hours (or more) a week starting mid-June – end of August. During the months of July – end of August the Educational Coordinator is also our Day Camp Director for camp programming at Soule in the summertime. Some Saturdays and the occasional evenings are required as needed.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years in age, must be or be willing to complete Day Camp Director certification with the state of Massachusetts in time for summer programming.
- Previous teaching experience is required for this position.
- CPR & First Aid certification is required.
Programming at Soule currently includes but is not limited to farm based educational programming aimed at: local area elementary school field trips, homeschool group visits and curriculum, early education programs, afterschool programming, day summer camps, various scouting programs, community educational outreach programs (which require some local travel), working with various volunteer groups who come to Soule to lend a hand weekly, etc.
Some general duties for this position are listed below:
-Work with Executive Director, Administrative Assistant, and volunteers to create and deliver high quality educational programs that connect children and families to Soule Homestead. Curriculum development and on-going planning are an important part of this position. The Education Coordinator must be comfortable with public speaking and managing both large and small group programs.
-Successfully communicate with parents, teachers, homeschool groups, scout groups, and the general public to book programs that meet expectations.
-Coordinate, train, sometimes hire camp staff, and generally support volunteers to work as part of your educational programs.
– Stay up to date with all necessary Board of Health, program and camp certification, and on-site educational and camp specific regulations.
-Willing to attend conferences and trainings in order to network, learn new trends in the field and constantly improve.
Qualifications: A successful candidate for this position is a team player and has considerable experience working with children, families and the general public. This position requires some unique skills including the ability to work outside in a wide range of weather conditions, a comfort with gardening and agriculture including farm animals (more training will be provided), a flexible attitude about working in a rapidly changing environment. A serious commitment to providing a top notch experience for our visitors and for working with a diverse audience of people. You must be able to lift 50lbs. and be able to pass a CORI and SORI check as a condition for employment. Access to a vehicle is also needed as some programs are delivered off site.
